Current Status of Captain Underpants 2
As of 2024, a theatrical movie officially titled Captain Underpants 2 has not been announced by DreamWorks Animation or Netflix, which now holds the rights to the franchise. The original Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie was released in 2017. Since then, the property has shifted to Netflix with a pair of holiday specials. There is no confirmed production start date or release window for a second feature film.
What Has Been Officially Announced
First Epic Movie (2017)
Directed by David Soren, this film adapted the core premise of the books and performed solidly at the box office, but it did not launch an immediate sequel pipeline at DreamWorks.
Netflix Holiday Specials (2024)
In 2024, Netflix released Captain Underpants: Halloween Hijinks and Captain Underpants: Winter Break Wasteland. These specials indicate continued investment in the property, though they are not a second theatrical feature.
Why a Sequel Has Not Been Confirmed
Shifted studio priorities, changes in executive leadership at DreamWorks, and the transition of streaming rights to Netflix created uncertainty. Producing a theatrical sequel requires aligning box office performance, merchandise potential, and streaming strategy, which has not yet resulted in a greenlight.

Path From Books to Screen
The Captain Underpants series by Dav Pilkey became popular for its humor and inventive storytelling. DreamWorks acquired film rights and produced the 2017 movie, which respected the tone of the books. The move to Netflix has allowed the property to experiment with animated shorts and specials rather than immediately pursuing a big-screen sequel.
What Could Happen Next
- If Netflix sees strong viewership for the holiday specials, they may greenlight a full-length series or film.
- A new film would likely require a fresh creative pitch, casting, and script development, placing any release many years out.
- No set timeline exists; announcements will depend on strategic decisions from Netflix and DreamWorks.
Fan Expectations and Realistic Timelines
Fans hoping for Captain Underpants 2 should expect a wait of several years, if a feature film moves forward at all. Short-form animated content is more likely in the near term. Staying updated via official Netflix and DreamWorks channels will provide the earliest signals of progress.
Key Takeaways
- No Captain Underpants 2 has been officially announced.
- The property is now on Netflix, which has released holiday specials instead of a sequel.
- Production of a second feature would depend on performance, strategy, and creative development.
